Old South Pittsburg Hospital Investigation: Revisited 2014

The Old South Pittsburg Hospital was built in 1959 and is located on the foothill of South Pittsburg Mountain, in South Pittsburg, TN. The hospital was built on a solid Limestone rock, as its foundation and a natural spring running directly under the hospital and into the most Northwest part of the Tennessee River. During the Civil war South Pittsburgh original name was "Pittsburg Landing" The Ferry landing is only an eighth of a mile from the hospital that was used by both Confederate and Union Soldiers to land at South Pittsburg, and to travel down to Chickamauga Battlefield. In our City Cemetery there are Union and Confederate Soldiers buried side by side that passed in the line of duty. There is also a small section dedicated to the slaves that lived and died here as well with unmarked headstones.

In 1778, the Chiaha Tribe located in what is now called South Pittsburg, used this land to live, hunt, fish, and grow orchards. During the Civil War the Chiaha Tribe gave safe passage to the Union Soldiers to transport and store their artillery in the foothills behind the hospital. The most notable war event here was the bombing of the Union Army's earthen redoubt, Fort McCook, in August 1862. Many lost their lives including some Native Americans from the Cherokee Tribe. Confederate forces entrenched on the ridges in the New Hope community on the opposite side of the Tennessee River in New Hope, from here timed this attack simultaneously with and attack on hospital land at the edge of town, prior to the hospitals construction. This was in the effort to gain control of this part of the Sequachee Valley. Both assaults were successful in their intent with the Union Army attacking the fort at Battle Creek during the night leaving it and much of the stores and supplies to its Confederate victors. Some of the artillery bunkers still exist today behind the hospital in the foothills of South Pittsburg Mountain.

During the Civil war, Gamble Plantation was built here. There have been reports that there were shackles in the basement for slaves that they kept. This new information is currently being researched to find photos and more information.

Eventually the Union Army would regain control of the area  by late summer 1863 and continue its grip until the end of the war. Despite not having a major battle here, the area was ravaged by the thousands of soldiers passing through the area during the war who took livestock, foods and other necessities from the area Native Americans and farmers for the benefit of their cause. This resulted in hard times for many of these families following the end of the war as the attempted to rebuild their lives.

South Pittsburg eventually recovered in shipping its most prized possession and that was minerals and limestone. During 1887, the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis railway was build to bring more commerce to the city. At which point the city grew, both financially and resident wise.

In the doors opened to a hospital situated on 2.3 acres in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. This 68,000 square foot medical facility, founded by four doctors, was known as the South Pittsburg Municipal Hospital (SPMH). Additions to the hospital were built prior to 1980. This bastion of healing would serve the community for almost 40 years before closing its doors for the last time in 1998.

In April of 1997, Hospital Corp. of America (HCA), at the time the nation's largest hospital chain, held the groundbreaking for Grandview Medical Center in Jasper, Marion County. According to HCA, which has also used the name Columbia, the new 50 bed, 95,000 square foot, medical facility was developed to replace the long serving and aging medical center in South Pittsburg.

The loss of their hospital dismayed many in the community who felt that the new hospital should also be located in South Pittsburg. On November 14, 1995 the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported that "the city sued in Marion County Chancery Court to force the manager of its hospital to disclose whether it intends to close the non-profit hospital." The mayor of the city at that time, David Payne worried that "Columbia has refused repeated requests that it assure the city that it does not intend to buy South Pittsburg Hospital and close it to prevent competition with the one Columbia plans to build just outside the city." At that time, Columbia, which had managed SPMH for several years, had only agreed to pay $50,000 for the equity in the hospital. The article suggests that Columbia may have been interested in the acquisition of SPMH to acquire its Certificate of Need for beds, which would assist them in obtaining the state approval needed to build Grandview. Over the disapproval of many in the South Pittsburg community, the new $30 million hospital eventually opened its doors to great fanfare the week of September 29, 1998, while the long serving nonprofit hospital quietly closed its doors.

Hauntings: Over the years since its closing, there have been many reports of unusual and paranormal activity relayed from South Pittsburgh residents, Former employees, media, investigators and teams. Some of this activity was reported from the first day the hospital was open. Baby cries in the Nursery when there were no babies there at the time is only one example. Does the hospital hold memories from its colorful past tied to the land or the hospital's darker past and many deaths within its walls? A lot of evidence has surfaced from the Old South Pittsburg Hospital on a regular basis of paranormal activity that you are welcome to view on this website. This activity includes, but not limited to day time and night time photos, being touched, full body apparitions, black shadow people, strange balls of light, disembodied voices calling out to you, doors slamming of their own will, and sounds of footsteps.

Upon years of research and contacts, some of the former nurses, employees and patients have come forward with their own experiences while working here when it was open. When the hospital was open many employees, patients and security have reported things moving in the hallways, such as medicine carts, shadow people, being touched by unseen hands, full body apparitions and many times the security was called thinking there was an intruder during all 3 shifts because they heard voices heard noises and saw shadow people lurking in the hallways and rooms. Come to find out that there was no one there, and no reasonable cause.

Some of the nurses that worked here reported baby cries or woman screaming, when there was no one there. To this day teams often capture these sounds through EVPs and video. There seems to be many souls that still remain within the aging concrete walls of the Old South Pittsburg Hospital that really want to make contact and be heard.

There has been evidence that suggests that we have many young children and adults that remain and want to speak out to you! We have 2 doctors making rounds as usual, and one that doesn't like you going into the operating rooms without washing up.

One of the most common reports is of a large black shadow man we believe that is a pedophile of children. His menacing presence and doesn't seem to want you here!! He will tell you to Fuck Off, "Get the Hell Out", "Leave", and sometimes will tell the other spirits not to talk to us. There is a deep dark secret that he hides! When he is near, you have an overwhelming feeling of heaviness may occur. Although no one has been injured, this shadow man makes it clear he doesn't want you here! Slamming doors are very common here, voices and numerous EVPs captured reminds you his presence is strong. He has been sighted here on a regular basis. This is just one of the numerous experiences you may encounter while investigating.

From our best estimates, there are at least 8 children, 6 of which remain on the third floor. You may encounter one of the hospitals visitor’s favorites "Buddy", on the 3rd Floor. This is a small child probably about the age of two, wanting to play or asking you to pick him up. There has been a thermal video on this website that was captured of him. Baby cries and woman sobbing have been heard throughout the building.

There is an older woman on the 3rd Floor at the end of the hallway that tends to not like females, but will call out to the male guests. The second floor you may encounter one of the two Nurses that passed here. Or a male that died from TB as he calls out for "Help". A woman screaming or babies crying are very common here in all areas of the hospital.

One of saddest patients here is Hazel, an elderly woman. She is our screaming lady. Her voice has been captured here in the hallways with an unforgettable scream. Back in the day, she was admitted to the Hospital from a local nursing home for a mental observation then to go up to the Psych ward. She has a rough and gravely voice, and tells people to "Go Back!" After 3 days of her stay here, Hazel died from infections, and complications. She has been heard and recorded several places in the hospital. When you hear her scream or yell at you, you will never forget it!!

Down by the Bio-Hazard you sometimes feel and hear someone step closely behind you, only to turn around and no one is there. There have been several photos of the entity we call "Hissing man". He seems to beckon you as you walk near that area, with a "hey"!

In the basement, we have a fun spirit that we call the "Naughty Nurse". She doesn't seem to give up her name, but often will touch you softly in personal places or whisper things or laugh to let you know she is around. In the basement, you may encounter a residual Doctor walking around or black shadow that may walk right up to you. We have had many reports of an old Janitor here that died in the 60's when the Hospital was still operating, that still works around the building and doesn't like you criticizing his work. He is still looking for his keys. These are just some of the spirits that you might encounter here.

Some say all of this History and Geographical formations can amplify the paranormal activity that occurs here on a regular basis. There is the only “Ley Line” In TN located within 2 miles of the property. This Ley line runs directly through Russell Cave, where the Native Americans used to use.

Equipment setup: I had a IR camcorder, IR illuminator facing into Martha’s room and placed in the room was the EM Vortex, REM Pod and Paracorder 667. A full-spectrum camera was positioned to shoot down the upstairs hallway towards the Operating

Rooms with a large IR illuminator. Also down that corridor was placed a set of IR motion detectors, a series of negative ion detectors and an EM Pump. Another set of IR motion detectors was positioned down the entrance hallway along with a series of negative ion detectors and Stan’s IR camera. The G.E.I.S.T. equipment was placed in Martha’s room along with an additional IR camera and GhostMic.

The Ghost Research Society re-investigated Old South Pittsburg Hospital on May2-3, 2014. Team members included: Stan Suho, Kathie Para, Marge Sucha, Sandy Weber, Michael Wright and Dale Kaczmarek with help from Bob Davies, Lori Leger and Chris Williams from Champaign-Urbana Paranormal Society, Jeanne Chilton and Mike McElhiney from PRIOM and James Clauson.

Experiments performed: EVP, Ghost Box and Ovilus X sessions were conducted in the Geriatrics Wing, Martha’s Room, the Operating hallway, Nursery, Pharmacy and Operating Room. We also conducted a recreation of a surgical procedure in one of the Operating Rooms.

Personal experiences:

Mike Wright: Arrived Friday afternoon at the hospital, when I was carrying in equipment got a very uneasy feeling in the hallway by the back entrance, that particular hallway was the most difficult to spend time in.

Later that night a small group of our team did a EVP session in the hallway by Geriatrics my recorder started malfunctioning, so I did not get much recorded during any of the sessions, it would stay on for a short while then it would shut off.

On Saturday we did several EVP sessions,

The first session was in the hallway by the Bio Hazard Lab, Kathy Para was using her dowsing rods and the rods were responding to questions that were being asked.

The second EVP session was in the Nursery which did not appear to be active.

The third session was in the hallway upstairs outside the Nursery and the door swung open right before the door opened my K-II meter spiked to the highest level several times then it went back to 2 lights, also felt uncomfortable (later when I went in that hallway there was only 1 light.)

Later that night we did a re-enactment of a surgery I was the patient and during the anesthesia part I was counting down and there was a voice that was picked up on the recorders finishing my countdown.

Did not get any uneasy feelings while that was going on.

Also did an EVP session outside Martha's room, the only thing that I experienced was felling uneasy doing the session.

Really liked this investigation overall OSPH was a very interesting place.

Dale Kaczmarek: The swinging doors swung open on the 2nd floor near the Nursery while we were conducting an EVP session. We tried to recreate the event but were unable to make the heavy doors swing open against the door stop. While I was setting up an IR camera pointing into Martha’s room, my IR illuminator on a very sturdy tripod was struck hard by something unseen and when I turned to the direction of the light, it was still moving! I heard a strange sound or voice near the elevators by the Nurse’s Station. Later when several of the group was discussing the elevator situation and the occasional sounds prior visitors had heard coming from the closed shaft, all of us clearly hear the “ding” of the elevator like when it would arrive at the floor. While conducting an EVP session in the Nursery, all of the participants clearly heard the sound of door followed by footsteps in the hallway. Jeanne immediately got up to check the hallway and found nobody there. Almost every time I had to go up to the 2nd floor, I got creeped out and had the hair on my arms stand up on end.

Stan Suho: This was our third visit to hospital. We were joined by Jeanne's group, Bob's group, and Jim a local. After the walkthrough, I decided to set up G.E.I.S.T. in Martha's room. An alternate camera was placed focusing down the entrance hallway. Last time we got some good paranormal effects at both places. In spite of the large group we were insulated from each other and did not interfere with one and other.

The complete G.E.I.S.T. setup was used with all recording instruments perking. GhostMic, GhostCam, DVR, and Audacity Laptop were running constantly. My second camera focused down the entrance hallway. This was right at the spot where the last time some strange lights appeared around Jeanne.
My part of the investigation proceeded smoothly and at the end of the second night I went around and turned off all my equipment. To my surprise the next morning when I walked into Martha's room, there was the LED on the GhostMic glowing brightly. Since Martha's room was pitch dark the previous night I would have spotted this. I might attribute this to ole absent minded Stash except something very similar happened on our last two visits, which I mentioned to Dale at the time. When not busy with the Command Post activities I walked around with the other groups taking pictures “for the website". Except for the aforementioned glowing LEDs on the GhostMic, nothing of a paranormal nature occurred to me or was recorded on several recording devices.

Conclusion:
As usual this was a very active place. As for the GhostMic Led being turned on I don't know what to make of it. However I will give the place two thumbs up.

Sandy Weber: Location: Old South Pittsburg Hospital, South Pittsburg, TN

Weather: The weather both days was in the mid 70’s, sunny, no rain.  At night, the temperature dropped to the high 50’s.  The night sky was mostly clear, with a slight crescent moon.

Other investigators present from GRS: Dale, Marge, Kathie, Mike, Stan.  Also present were Bob Davies and two members of his team, and Jeanne Chilton and two members of her team.

Equipment:      Sony camcorder set on night shot with very sensitive microphone

Thermometer: Infrared: FLIR

Phenomena witnessed by investigator

Friday night:     After a detailed tour conducted by Jeanne Chilton, our first investigation was in the Geriatric Wing, sitting on the floor in the corridor.  Looking down the corridor several hundred feet to the intersecting hallway, I saw a dark figure walk across the intersecting hallway and then a few seconds later it appeared walking back in the other direction.  The whole corridor was dark, but the figure was darker. The walk was confident—not as if the person was walking in the dark.  There was one figure, only.

A few seconds later, two members of Bob Davies’ team emerged from the intersecting hallway and walked down the connecting corridor to where we were sitting in the Geriatric corridor.  They said they had not seen anyone else in the hallway they had come from, and they had not crossed the corridor and then reversed their direction before walking down the connecting corridor to where we were sitting.

Jeanne said that is the location where a dark figure has been seen walking.  Fortunately, I had my camcorder pointing in that direction.

Later, reviewing the footage and stopping the video mid-frame, I was able to determine that the figure was wearing light pants, a dark top, and a lighter dark top over it.   However, the figure was looking downward—not the posture that would be expected of a healthcare worker and too confident and purposeful to be a patient.  Reviewing the footage of the two investigators when they reached our end of the corridor, one was wearing light pants and a dark top but not a second layer of a lighter dark top.  She also had a headlight. (Note: this is how it appeared on night shot.)  I do not believe the investigator in the light pants had time to remove a layer of clothing, and they insisted they had not crossed the corridor before returning to walk down it towards where we were sitting in the Geriatric Wing.  I am “on the fence” about whether the figure I saw was the investigator wearing the headlight.

Later that night, I slept in a hospital room with Kathie, Marge, and Mike.  I had the camcorder set on a tripod and filmed us sleeping for about 3˝ hours.  Nothing of interest was seen or heard.

Saturday:          On Saturday during the day, I mainly used the camcorder, while Mike used the FLIR.  I filmed a session with dowsing rods held by Kathie and then by Marge.  Something appeared to communicate with them.  I had to move away from where I could get a good view of the rods with my camcorder because it did not like me standing that close.  Therefore the camcorder did not document it very well.

That night, we did an EVP session in the “Nursery.” Jeanne used the FLIR while most of the investigators from the teams gathered around the walls.  Opposite Jeanne was a mirror.  I was standing to the left of the mirror (from Jeannie’s point of view).  On Jeanne’s left was a member of Bob’s team.  There was a picture on the wall behind her left shoulder.  Jeanne saw something dark blue (cold) move in and out of the mirror on the wall opposite Jeanne.  She asked us all to raise our hands, and the blue figure in the mirror did not raise its hand.  Jeanne managed to snap a picture of it.  Reviewing the shot later with Jeanne, she confirmed that that was the head and one shoulder of what she had seen moving in and out of the mirror.  I was using my camcorder during the session.  In my opinion, the photo was of the left shoulder and head of the member of Bob’s team standing in front and to one side of the picture on the opposite wall.  Assuming she raised her right hand when Jeannie asked us all to raise our hands, her right hand would not have been reflected behind her in the glass over the picture.  In my opinion, Jeanne’s FLIR shot was of the reflection in the mirror of the reflection in the glass over the picture.  The FLIR registered a cold reading, rather than the warm reading that would be expected for a human, because it registered the temperature in the mirror.

Later that day, during an EVP session on the third floor, we heard doors slamming.  We determined that the slams were made by “Big Mike” from Jeanne’s team, as a joke.

Later that night, we had an interesting EVP session in the “surgery” where GRS team member Mike played a patient about to have a vasectomy.  Jeanne was the doctor about to do the surgery, and Dale was the anesthesiologist.  Jeanne played her digital recorder back immediately after the session.  The most interesting finding was when Jeanne instructed the patient to count back from 10, advising him that he would be asleep before he reached “1”.  He stopped counting at 6, but something seemed to whisper "5…4…3.”  The voice was quite clear on the “5” and “3” and had the quality usually heard on an EVP.  I filmed the session on my camcorder and heard something at that point but could not identify words as clearly as they had appeared on Jeanne’s recorder.  Particularly interesting to me is that if this voice was from an “entity,” it clearly had a sense of humor, since nothing we were doing looked like a real operation was about to start—more like a Saturday Night Live skit with everyone laughing and acting silly. (It was really fun!) Although I found that evidence quite interesting, we know that a member of Jeanne’s team purposefully contaminated the earlier investigation, and in my opinion, all EVP evidence is suspect—particularly where Jeanne was involved—because his motive apparently was to play a joke on her.

Final Record

Summation:  I made no clear paranormal findings.  However, I question what the dark figure was that I saw during the investigation in the Geriatric Wing.

Kathy Para: GRS stayed at Old South Pittsburg Hospital for 48 hours, which gave us time to do some extensive investigating. Also present were members of PRIOM and CUPS.

We had quite a bit of activity starting almost as soon as we walked in. We got evidence from every piece of equipment we had available to us, including our own eyes, ears and bodies. It is quite a remarkable place for sure. Some of our experiences:

*EVPs were plentiful. In one session we were acting out a surgical procedure in Surgery. When our “patient” stopped counting backwards from ten “someone” finished the counting for him. We weren’t aware of this at the time, but only after listening to out recorders. *We also picked up the beeping of heart monitors on the same recorders. That would make perfect sense in an operating room.

*We also got disembodies screams, whispers and voices. *There were several instances of people’s hair standing on end and feeling touched. *Shadows were seen throughout the building that couldn’t be explained (both with the naked eye and FLIR camera.) *We had great success getting many intelligent responses from the Ovilus and Ghost Box, especially in the Nursery. *Blue flashes of light were also captured in the Nursery. *We were finding doors open that were previously closed and doors that had been open were closed when nobody had been in the area. This was especially true on the third floor. In fact, during an EVP session by the third floor Nurse’s Station we asked for a door to open or close. Shortly after, one of the hallway doors, that was propped open with a wooden wedge on carpet, slowly close about 18 inches while we watched.  *We had several temperature fluctuations, the most extreme being in Geriatrics hallway which went from the 50’s to the 80’s. *The elevator “dinged” as if it had arrived on the first floor. There is no power to the elevators. *Batteries draining and equipment malfunction. *Noises and voices in the hallway outside our rooms at night. Everyone was inside their rooms.

I would love to go back to this location. It is one of the most active places I’ve been to.

Marge Sucha: We arrived Friday May 2 early afternoon.   It was warm sunny out.

Since this was a 2 day investigation a full set up was done.

Shortly after we arrived, Stacy, from OSPH was going over some details and started explaining that the elevators were not working.  As soon as the words were out a bell rang from the elevator 3 times.  It was a bell you would here as the elevator arrives on your floor.

Jeanne gave us a tour of the hospital and shared with us her past experiences at OSPH.    I had my recorder running the whole time.  Near the end we were walking down some of the hallways we had been in earlier and Kathie Para asked me " What happen to the (I didn't hear what she said. My recorder picked up what appears to be a female voice asks “what's that?"

We did our first EVP session on the second floor in the hallway around the nurse’s station down by the nursery.  Several of the investigators heard the door stopper moving and noticed one of the doors in the hallway was moving away from the wall to a closed position.

Next we did an EVP session in the hallway in the Geriatric Ward.  I did catch a whisper in my recorder but could not make out the words.   We were asked politely using the Ovilus we were asked three times to leave and decided to move down the hall into Martha’s room.

Jeanne was using a FLIR camera and saw an extra figure coming in and out of the camera view.  Tried to debunk it by raising our hands switching people around but it could not be debunked.  Pretty awesome.

May 3

Mike, Kathie, Sandy and Marge decided to do an EVP session with dowsing rods in what we referred to as the creepy hallway.  This was the hallway you had to walk thru when you entered the building.   With a series of yes and no questions we found out that there was a young woman between 25-30 who had an accident and died in the hospital in the 1980’s.  Her name is Irene.  She was not married and did not have any children.   She is there waiting for someone. (Parents?)  Sometimes she appears as a shadow person and tries to scare people.    She really liked the previous caretakers and misses them.   During our session several times Stan came over to adjust his cameras and Irene would not answer our questions when he was around, but would resume when Stan left.

That evening we had another EVP session in the Geriatrics hallway and we asked Martha if she knew who Irene was.   She replied yes and we asked her if she knew how she died and the answer was "fall"

Our next EVP session was in the Nursery.   As we were settling down we heard walking and the outside door to the Nursery opening.   Jeanne went out to check it out and no one was there.  Several investigators saw different color lights appearing around the doorway.

We went up to the 2nd floor surgery room and several investigators reenacted a surgical procedure in the operating room.

We picked up some great EVPs during this session.

We did another EVP session on the second floor by the Nurse’s Station down by the Nursery.   Except for a few cranks, this session was pretty quiet.

Who are you.MPG – at the conclusion of the role playing experiment in the Operating Room, a whispered voice is heard to say, “Who are you?”

Conclusions: This location just continues to produce top-quality evidence and personal experiences every time we investigate. It is my firm belief that there are not only intelligent spirits still walking the halls of Old South Pittsburg Hospital but quite a number of residual traces as well. This is evident from the massive amounts of EVP and sometimes direct contacts and responses through the Ghost Box and Ovilus. The door swinging on the 2nd floor was a very unique experience and was a bit unnerving to some at first because it was so unexpected.
