Road's Hotel Investigation

Thought to have built around 1893 by Abraham Kauffman. The hotel served as a layover for the railroad that passed through the business district. This property started off as a boarding house and hotel but in its past was a brothel and speakeasy. It was never verified but some believe John Dillinger and Al Capone visited here.

It was later bought by Newton Roads. Newton was a fine fellow, Mason, Old Fellow and Maccabee. His wife Clara, nee Sanders, ran the hotel along with his their children Hazel and Everett. At age 19, Everett contracted tuberculosis and was confined in the hotel away from others. He eventually succumbed to the disease on April 15, 1909. His funeral was held in the hotel. The entire family later died in the house from various causes including stepmother Catherine.

The hotel had 7 boarders, Rev. Lester Poor , Clara Hare , Richard Hughes , Annie Hughes , William Mayer , John Wilson , WC Dezoto , 2 servants Ida Cook & Minnie Summers and Phillip Roads was the porter ( bell hop ).

The hotel closed for business in 1927 it was later purchased through an auction on June 15, 1965 by Dean Shaffer. It then passed hands into a paranormal group called Sixth Sense Indy Paranormal. Eventually it became the property of Lost Limbs and Robbin Terry.

Hauntings: Reports of disembodied voices and conversations often stemming from the upper floors, shadow play, numerous EVPs, doors open and close by themselves, the sound of footsteps, lights go off and on and many have caught glimpses of men, women and children in the building that simply disappear.

The Ghost Research Society investigated the Road's Hotel on  May 4, 2018. Team members included:  Kathie Para, Greg Kos and Dale Kaczmarek with help from Dean Thompson, Steve Scott, Pattie Moore, Brian and Christina Lavigne from PROSI.

Experiments performed: Ovilus X, Phasmabox and EVP sessions were conducted in the main dining room, the Doll Room and Room 5 upstairs.

Personal experiences:

Greg Kos: Members present Dale, Kathi, Greg and members of Dean Thompson’s group from Alton IL

Equipment used IR Camera, EDI Plus meter, K-II, and voice recorder

I reviewed my IR pics and my voice recorder with no results. My EDI Meter and a cell phone app called Ghost Hunting Tools were working very well. I went to the corner bedroom where the owner’s son had died from TB and had quite a time with the responses on both meters. The entity was the son and I had talked to him last year. He is quite fond of girls and showed his enthusiasm on the meters. I would love to go back and do a full night in that bedroom again.

The downstairs parlor room produced some amazing EVP /EDI and cell phone application called Ghost Hunting Tools. I showed it to Brian from Alton and they started using it right away. I believe a great time was had by all and can’t wait to go back.

Kathie Para:  Members of GRS present for this investigation were Dale Kaczmarek, Greg Kos and I. We were joined by several members of PROSI (Paranormal Research of Southern Illinois.)

We arrived late afternoon and spent the night there. The building is well maintained and has all the amenities.

Most of the audio I am submitting is from the Phasmabox, although we got many relevant responses from the Ovilus. We also had a lot of activity from the K-II meters in direct response to our conversations. The Tri-Field Natural EM meter was uncommonly active in the first floor “doll room” during our EVP session there.

Even though investigators got the overhead lamp to sway on command in the room I spent the night in, I had uninterrupted sleep. I was grateful for that.

My conclusion was that there were many spirits in the hotel but felt nothing negative. I would love to go back in the near future to further investigate.

Dale Kaczmarek: This was an interesting location and one that I have been dying to investigate; no pun intended. We only conducted three EVP sessions in three different locations but all of them were pretty active in words that came through the Ovilus X or the Phasmabox.  In the Doll Room, the Tri-Field Natural EM Meter, which is not sensitive to interior AC fields began to alert with some spikes as high as 5 on the dial. This is very uncommon as this device hardly ever goes off but when it does, it’s usually something to be reckoned with.

Evidence collected:

Come in the door’s open roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room, the device said, “Come in” and a follow up question asked, “Where do you want us to come in?” The device replied with, “The door’s open.”

Doll Room yeah smoke roads.MPG – while conducting an Ovilus X session in phonetic mode in the Doll Room, a question was asked, “Did smoking lead to tuberculosis with you?” The Ovilus responded with, “Yeah smoke.”

Doubt roads.MPG – while conducting an Ovilus X session in dictionary mode in the main dining room, a question was asked, “Mark are you still here?” The device responded with, “Doubt.”

Main floor chime hear it nope roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room the sound of a chime from a clock was heard again; a question was asked, “Was there a grandfather’s clock in here?” The device responded with, “Nope.”

Main room clock chime roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room the sound of a chime from a clock was heard.

Main room fuck you roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room, the device said, “Fuck you.”

Main room hello roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room, the device said, “Hello.”

Main room listen piano roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room, a comment was made, “We’re trying to talk to you”, a voice came through that says, “Listen” followed by a few notes from a piano.

Main room we’re gone roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room, a question was asked, “Did you leave us?” The device responded with, “We’re gone.”

Main room woman sentence roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room, an entire sentence spoken by a female comes through the device. It’s hard to discern what is being said however.

Main room yep roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room, a question was asked, “Do you eat bacon?” The device responded with, “Yep.”

Male roads.MPG – while conducting a Phasmabox session in the main dining room, a question was asked, “Are you a male or a female?” The device responded almost instantly with, “Male” even though it sounds like a female voice.

Room 5 huge roads.MPG – while conducting an Ovilus X session in dictionary mode in Room 5, a question was asked, “That’s awful big letters there, huh?” The Ovilus responded with, “Huge.

Room 5 odd tone again roads.MPG – while conducting an EVP session in Room 5, a question was asked, “If you want us to leave, we can leave.” A strange low tone was recorded again.

Room 5 odd tone don’t don’t’ don’t roads.MPG – while conducting an EVP session in Room 5, a question was asked, “Is there something you want to say to us?” A strange low tone was recorded followed by “Don’t don’t don’t” on a cellphone application.

Stay here roads.MPG – while conducting an Ovilus X session in phonetic mode n the Doll Room, a question was asked, “Do you want us to leave? Do you want us to stay?” The device responded with, “Stay here.”

Words spoken by the Ovilus X in dictionary mode:

Room 5: gag, murder, Mark, shot, bottom, U, doubt, team, law, dirty, however, position, pattern, Greek, huge, object, work and square. Ghost Radar words include: dug, Matthew, Don, disaster, helpless and moldy.

Doll Room: park, however, Mark, work, storm, lie, average, inform, alone and huge.

Main Dining Room: Ovilus X was not used here.

Conclusions: Many of the real-time EVP devices used at various locations within the building were very active. Even though there were not a lot of direct responses, the words that came through these devices were indeed very relevant to the history of the location and the people who lived and died here.

It appears that we were in contact with multiple entities that once lived here especially Everett who died of tuberculosis in his teens. There was a direct response to the TB question and it sounded like it came from a male.

The nice thing about this location is that there was a fully functional kitchen with a stove, refrigerator and microwave. There are also sleeping quarters with mattresses however no air conditioning. Many of the rooms did have ceiling fans and it might be a good idea if you decide to investigated this location to come in months that are not exceedingly hot.
